Be an Active Family
Being active as a family can benefit everyone. Adults need 2½ hours a week of physical activity, and children need 60 minutes a day. Check out these tips to add more activity to your family’s busy schedule.
We met with Jennifer Stimson, the Commissioner of Chemung County Department of Social Services, to share the work being done by Eat Smart NY educators in the Finger Lakes and Chemung County to reach SNAP eligible participants. When telling her about the newly launched “Rethink Your Drink” campaign, she exclaimed that she and her nine year old daughter just saw one of the billboards in Elmira while driving home. It prompted a conversation about beverage choices, to limit soda and reach for low fat milk and water every day. Later that day her daughter reached for a soda from the refrigerator, paused, looked at her Mom and said, “not a healthy choice, right?” Then she put it back and helped herself to a glass of water instead.
